Profitis Ilias | 2.803m

In the early 16th century Saint Dionysios wandered on Olympus with the purpose of finding the best place to found his monastery. He is considered the first explorer of Olympus and is the one who in 1550 build the chapel of Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elias), on the peak of the same name. At this very place it is said that the Temple of Apollo existed, showing that believers had access to the mountain since the ancient times.

However some writers refer to the Sultan Mehmed IV as the first explorer, who around 1669 ascended the southern peaks escorted by hundreds of subordinates, horses and camels. However, his aim was not the exploration of the mountain, but hunting.

From the plateau of the Muses the visitor needs less than 40 minutes to reach the top of Profitis Ilias, walking along a fairly good trail. The view toward the northern ridges is breathtaking, while the sea to the east becomes one with the horizon. Ideal spot to see the first rays of the sun touch Stefani summit!
