Megali Toumba summit is located on the north side of Olympus, West of Profitis Ilias and North of Stefani. From the summit you can discern the mountaintops of Bulgaria to the north, while the Kazania behind Stefani demonstrate the wild side of the mountain. The gaze is lost on the horizon looking to the East, with the plateau of the Muses in center stage and the sea forming the backdrop.
The name comes from the latin word tumba, which is borrowed from the greek "τύμβος"(timvos) = earth mound. The German geographer and explorer Heinrich Barth is the first to mention Toumba in his writings, as he found himself on Olympus in 1862 with eyes and mind “nailed” to the untrodden peaks of the mountain.
Several years later, in 1913, the writer and art historian Daniel Baud-Bovy, gives the honorary name of his assistant Jacques Philippe to the peak. Bovy along with his assistant and the lumberjack and hunter from Litochoro, also a mount Olympus Guide Christos Kakalos, reached Toumba summit from Profitis Ilias and tried to find a passage to the highest peak of Olympus mountain, Mytikas.
